The Olympics start this Friday and no one is more pumped for it than me, I am an Olympic junkie.
My love for and fascination with the Olympics started with the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid NY, specifically the "Miracle" ice hockey game between the US and the evil, vile and most importantly UNBEATABLE USSR's Red Army team. I was a strapping 6 year old with a healthy love for ice hockey and the incredible feelings i had and still remember of the fans in attendence going nuts as the clock ticked down... "Do you believe in miracles?!?!?!?"... just writing that I got full body chills, it still moves me immensely. Video of the last 15 seconds of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTev5pSuYLk
I watched a documentary on this game and the Soviet players were some of the best players in the world, they were unstoppable. This game was literally a match up likened to a college baseball team vs the Yankees. After the game, the Soviet players watched as the US team went nuts celebrating and they said something along the lines that they'd lost that feeling of joy playing under such pressure and dominance and they too were moved by the US team's victory.
What are my other top Olympic memories you ask? How about Kerri Strug's one footed vault landing to ensure the gold medal for the US women's gymnastics team??? Kerri fell on her first vault and injured her left leg/ankle. Her score for that vault was not enough to secure the gold... She had one more chance but was only working with one good foot. How could she score better than a 9.4???? Surely hope was lost, right???

Surely hope was lost, right??? WRONG. THE USA ALWAYS WINS!!!!!!
The Olympics start friday, get geared up and enjoy!
